Sandra A. Brown,
Ph.D. is Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University
of California, San Diego and Chief of Psychology Service at the
Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System. She is also Associate
Director of the Child and Adolescent Services Research Center
at Children's
Hospital of San Diego. Dr. Brown is internationally recognized
for her
developmentally focused alcohol intervention research. She is
the past
President of Division 50 (Addictions) of the American Psychological
Association and has over 190 publications. She is involved in
addiction
prevention and intervention at the regional, state and national
level. Dr.
Brown's NIAAA funded research yielded some of the pioneering
information on
the relapse process for youth as well as long term outcomes for
clinical
samples of youth with alcohol and drug problems. Her current
research
investigates processes whereby youth escalate or diminish their
alcohol use
with and without treatment, and the role of psychiatric comorbidity
in
alcohol and drug abuse treatment.

Dr. Vivian
B. Brown is President and Chief Executive Officer of PROTOTYPES,
Centers for Innovation in Health,
Mental Health and Social Services. She
founded this nonprofit organization in 1986, based on an identified
need for services that would be flexible enough
to meet the demands of rapidly changing communities.
Under her guidance, PROTOTYPES provides substance
abuse treatment and prevention programs to women and their
children; HIV/AIDS
outreach education, prevention, and community services to women
and their families; mental health treatment
and dual diagnosis interventions; trauma interventions
and preventions; and training, technical assistance,
consultation, and research. Dr. Brown has served
as a consultant in the areas
of health, substance abuse and mental health to a wide variety
of national and international organizations. She
currently holds the position of Associate Professor for the
Department of Psychiatry at University of
California Los Angeles.

Psychopharmacology for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Clinicians
Michael
J. Gitlin, M.D. is Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the
UCLA School of Medicine. He is currently the
Director of the Adult Division in the Department of Psychiatry
and Director
of the Mood Disorders Clinic at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Hospital,
where he is also the Medical Director of the Aftercare Clinic,
a research clinic in schizophrenia. He is the author
of many scientific articles and book chapters as well as two
editions
of a solo authored psychopharmacology textbook written for
nonphysician therapists entitled "The Psychotherapist's
Guide to Psychopharmacology” published by the Free Press. He
served as Chief of Staff at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital from
1997-1999. His most recent award was: Distinguished Educator
Award in Teaching from the UCLA Department of Psychiatry, the
UCLA Department of Psychiatry.

Prescription Drug Abuse
Dr. Walter Ling is a board-certified neurologist and psychiatrist,
licensed to practice in the state of California. He
is active in both research and clinical work, having been listed
in the ‘Best Doctors
of America’, ‘Best Doctors in the
West’, and ‘Best Doctors in Los Angeles’. He
was also named by ‘Good Housekeeping’ magazine
as one of the 327 best mental health
clinicians in the US. Dr. Ling is Professor of Psychiatry
and Director of the Integrated Substance Abuse Programs
(ISAP) at UCLA. His work in opiate
pharmacotherapy has provided pivotal information for the approval
of LAAM,
naltrexone, and buprenorphine. In addition, his
group conducts a wide range
of epidemiological and treatment service outcome research in
California and
throughout the US. He is a consultant for numerous
private and public
agencies, both locally, nationally and internationally. These
agencies
include the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the US Department
of State,
the UN Office of International Narcotics Affairs and the World
Health
Organization.

Methamphetamine and the Brain
Dr. London is Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmacology at
the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She
came to UCLA after a long career at the National
Institute on Drug Abuse, where she started the Neuroscience Research Branch
and built and directed the Brain Imaging Center. Dr. London’s
primary research contributions are in the application of brain imaging methods
to
the study of substance abuse. She has trained a number of successful
researchers, and has authored 233 original research articles and 68 reviews,
most of them
basic science papers on drug action in the brain. Her current research focuses
on nicotine and methamphetamine dependence and the problem of impulse control.

Alan Marlatt, Ph.D.

Presentation:
Mindfulness in Substance Abuse Treatment G. Alan Marlatt is Professor of Psychology and Director of
the Addictive Behaviors Research Center at the University of
Washington. His major focus in both research and
clinical work is the field of addictive behaviors. In
addition to over 200
journal articles and book chapters, he has published several
books in the addictions field, including Relapse Prevention
(1985), Assessment of Addictive Behaviors (1988), Harm Reduction
(1998), and Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College
Students (BASICS): A Harm Reduction Approach (1999). In
1990, Dr. Marlatt was awarded the Jellinek Memorial Award for
outstanding
contributions to knowledge in the field of alcohol studies,
in 2001 he was given the Innovators in Combating Substance
Abuse Award by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and in 2004
he received the Distinguished Research Award from the Research
Society on Alcoholism.

American Mania: Have We Inadvertently Created An Addictive
Society?
Peter
C. Whybrow, M.D. is Director of the Jane & Terry
Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA,
and the Judson Braun Distinguished Professor and Executive
Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences
at the David Geffen School of Medicine. Dr. Whybrow
is an international authority on depression and manic-depressive
disease and the effects of thyroid hormone on brain and human
behavior. A founding member and Fellow of the
Royal College of Psychiatrists, Fellow of the American Association
for
the Advancement of Science, the American College of Psychiatrists,
and the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Whybrow has
lectured widely across the United States and Europe, and
is the recipient of many awards. He is a frequent
advisor to universities, foundations, and government agencies
and
is the author of numerous scientific papers and five books,
including A Mood Apart: The Thinker’s Guide
to Emotion and its Disorder, and American Mania: When More
Is Not Enough.

A. Rawson, Ph.D.

Latest Research on Methamphetamine Abuse and Treatment
Dr.
Rawson received a PhD in experimental psychology from the
University of
Vermont in 1974. Since that time he has spent his
career conducting research
and developing treatment systems for substance abuse disorders. Dr.
Rawson has been a member of the UCLA Department of Psychiatry
for over 20 years. In his role
as ISAP Associate Director, Dr. Rawson oversees a portfolio
of addiction research ranging from brain imaging
studies to numerous clinical trials on pharmacological
and psychosocial addiction treatments to the study
of how new treatments are applied in the treatment system. During
the past decade, he has worked with the U.S.
State Department on large substance abuse
research and treatment projects, exporting technology and addiction
science to Mexico, Thailand, Israel, Egypt, and the Palestinian
Authority. Dr.
Rawson has published two books, 15 book chapters, and over
125 professional papers and has conducted
over 1,000 workshops, paper presentations,
and training sessions.

Arnold M. Washton, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist specializing
in addiction treatment since 1975. He is Executive
Director of Recovery Options, a private practice of addiction

New York City and Princeton, NJ. A noted clinician,
researcher, and author of over 100 professional publications
including several
books, his work in recent years has focused on strategies for
treating alcohol and drug problems in office-based practice,
